Training Sessions

Training sessions run all year, but are focused around the race season (May to September). During the early winter sessions we concentrate on base fitness and technique. After Christmas and into early spring we aim to build endurance, into late spring the intensity increases in preparation for the competition season throughout the summer. Training is specific to Tri Star age groups.

In addition to the sessions below, a Sunday training session will be organised for the Youth Team and will focus on either running or cycling depending on the time of year. A programme of the dates, times and venues for the Sunday sessions will be sent out to the Youth Team at the beginning of each month.

To start out at Hoddesdon Tri you will need a roadworthy bike (any type welcome), running shoes and swim kit. Once you have settled at the club, you may wish to purchase some club kit.

Training venues

Bike and Run Training: Friday 17:30-18:30
(Every week rain or shine) Broxbourne Sports Club broxbourne

Mill Lane Close
EN10 7BG

Our main training site all year round. In the winter months we use the astroturf pitches for running and strength work. When the weather improves we can move out onto the surrounding pitches to work on bike techniques. We also work on transition skills at these sessions, so transition kit (bike helmets, goggles and swimming hat) should be brought along, along with a bottle of water. In the colder months, layer up for warmth, with hats and gloves too.

Open Water Swimming: Tuesday 6-7pm (May to August)
Lee Valley White Water Centre

Station Roadwhite water

Waltham Cross

Several events involve open water swims, and it’s a great skill to improve swim strength and technique. We are fortunate to be able to use the artificial lake at this Olympic venue, and these are great sessions to build confidence in the open water. You will need a wetsuit – these can be hired for a small fee at the venue, or talk to the coaches for recommendations if you want to purchase one. There is a swim test to ensure that those t
aking part are competent in the water.

Bike Training: Every 3rd Sunday 8am-9am (See Season Calendar)
Rye House Kart Raceway

Rye Road Rye Houserye house
EN11 0EH

These sessions allow those taking part to focus on road racing techniques in a safe and closed environment. It’s also provides a good fun circuit for them to ride on.

Gunpowder Parkrunpark run

We also attend the Gunpowder Parkrun on the second Saturday of every month. This is a free 5k race, open to Juniors, Youths and Seniors. Our younger me
mbers often start by completing a single 2.5km lap before progressing to the full 5km race. More information and guidance can be found on the Gunpowder website below.

These races are completely free, but do require all athletes to complete a one-time only registration to receive a barcode: this is to record your times.

Swimming: Hoddesdon Swimming Club
John Warner Sports Centre

Stanstead Roadswimming
EN11 0RH

Many of the Juniors are members of local swimming clubs which is fantastic; if this is the case then you should stay at that club for your swim training.
If you are not attached to a club then there are a few options.
1. Join Hoddesdon Swimming Club as a full time swimmer (Or another club).
2. Members of Hoddesdon Tri Club are able to do swim training with Hoddesdon Swimming Club as a Swim Trainer which gives you access to ‘pay as you go’ swim training (£5 per hour/£6 per 90 mins /£7 per 2 hour session). Hoddesdon Swimming Club will arrange for you to attend a session for assessments which would then enable them to allocate a specific squad depending on your ability. You will also need to become an ASA member to train with the club (annual ASA membership £18).

The Youth Team are encouraged to swim at least one to two times a week. This can be with a swimming club of their choice. Another option is through being a member of Hoddesdon Tri Club to swim with Hoddesdon Swimming Club on a “pay as you” go basis. From 15 years and older there is also an opportunity (and subject to the agreement of HTCs Head Coach, Ant Collier) to swim with the HTC Senior Squad on a Wednesday evening at Simon Balle School. In order to swim at any of these sessions with the Tri or Swimming Club you will need ASA membership.

For more information about the swimming sessions, ASA membership, and any other queries about Youth Team training or events, please contact Peter Biggs, HTC Youth Team Manager. (email or tel no. 07983 537733).

If you are swimming with Hoddesdon Swimming Club, then it is important to have your money in an envelope marked with your name, squad and Hoddesdon Tri Club on the front, which should be handed into a committee member prior to starting your swim.
